The brand-new 2022 Chevy Silverado 3500 HD is the real deal of heavy-duty trucks. Build to be burly and brash and to tow huge loads with ease, it can easily fit a couple of tons in the bed without breaking a sweat. Updated with a revolutionary new tailgate for 2022, the 3500 HD now has more capability than ever before. To help you get to know this workhorse of a truck, we’ve put together this guide to help you get an idea of what to expect when you visit our dealership.

Overview

The 3500 HD is the weightlifter of Chevy’s lineup, and the latest iteration is no exception, with an incredible torque curve and a nifty automatic transmission that keeps the engine right at the sweet spot. The 3500 HD always seems to have more power to give, and the great throttle response makes it a pleasure to drive no matter what weight it might be moving. There are two engine options and a standard six-speed automatic to transfer that awesome power to the wheels. You can choose between 4WD or RWD too.

Lots of cabin space gives you plenty of space to stretch your legs out with plenty of storage options for whatever you’re not throwing in the back. There are three options: a regular cab that seats three, a double cab that adds a second row and can seat six; choose the crew cab for the most space in the back.

Payload and Towing

Transporting heavy loads is what the 3500 HD was built to do, and it carries out this duty with ease. Topping out at about 16,800lbs for the gas-powered variants, and just over 17,000lbs with the addition of a gooseneck. However, to really go for the top, choose a variant powered by the V8 diesel – it can tow as much as 20,000lbs from the tow hitch. Add a gooseneck, and you’ll quickly be pushing as much as 36,000lbs.

If it’s payload capacity you’re after, you’ll do better with the gas engine which can give you a maximum of just over 7,400lbs, compared to the diesel variant which tops out at just over 6,500lbs.

Engine and Transmission

Buyers of the 3500 HD have two engine options to choose from, both of which are V8s. Coming as standard is the 6.6-liter gas-powered engine which will net you 401hp and 464lb-ft of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. However, the real beast is the diesel V8, which can give you 445hp and a mind-boggling 910-lb-ft of torque.

What you do with all that torque is up to you once it’s been sent to the wheels via the 10-speed Allison transmission (also automatic), but you’ sure to not run short. Both drivetrains have the option of either 4WD or RWD.

Technology

All models of the 3500 HD come equipped with an outstanding infotainment system that works with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The work truck trim has a two-speaker audio system, while higher trims will get you six-speaker options, with a premium 7-speaker Bose setup as standard on the high-end variants.
