Ft. Smith National Historic Site

This is a day trip all residents should take to get to know the important history that helped shape the city they live in. The Ft. Smith Historic Site features a visitors center that is housed in an old courthouse and barracks building. It’s a great place to start your tour to admire a variety of exhibits that tell the story of the city’s expansion. The remaining grounds contain structures that have held strong since the early 1800s.

Miss Laura’s Visitor Center

Miss Laura’s Visitor Center is an old bordello located along the Arkansas River. It’s one of the last remaining houses left from the town’s now-extinct red-light district. This popular landmark is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and visitors can explore the entire property, which has been restored to showcase its original beauty. Daily tours are also available from knowledgeable tour guides for guests who want a more in-depth look at the history of the home.

Parrot Island Waterpark

A day at Parrot Island Waterpark is a great way to cool off in the Arkansas heat. This family-friendly water park features an array of slides, rides, and a relaxing lazy river. Designated toddler rides are also available, as well as a shallow kiddie pool. Some of the faster, action-packed slides include Tangerine Twist and Pelican Plunge. You’ll have plenty to choose from, and some great food options as well, so you can spend the afternoon and enjoy a bite to eat.

Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center

This is one of four nature centers operated by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. Visitors of the Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center will enjoy exploring its 14,000 square foot facility while admiring the scenic views of the surrounding 170 acres of lakes, valleys, wetlands, and forest. There is also an abundance of activities to participate in such as canoeing, fishing, archery, and hunting. Guided hikes are also available through one of the many stunning trails.

Clayton House

Anyone with an appreciation for history and Italian architecture will want to visit this real-life history book that dates back to the Victorian period. This Italian-style estate is located in the city’s Belle Grove Historic District and is considered a work of art by any standard. William Henry Harrison Clayton owned the home and as visitors will learn on their guided tour, he spared no expense. The home features stunning imported furniture and fireplaces in each room – a luxury back then.
