It was the Atkinson-Williams warehouse, the largest surviving commercial building in Fort Smith. The artifacts spread over multiple floors, and include a reconstruction of the courthouse of famous Judge Isaac C Parker. Other reconstructed sights include a working soda fountain and an old pharmacy. You can browse through an amazing display of original American hand tools, visit the On Air display to learn about the history of broadcasting, or view the history of the telephone from the original instruments to the present. It's a fascinating trip back through time to learn more about the people and events that helped to shape Fort Smith's history. W.H.H. Clayton House This house was the home of the chief prosecutor at the time Judge Isaac C Parker. It's of wood construction and stands 2 1/2 stories high. The house has been a museum since 1970 and portrays the home life of a well-to-do attorney of the era. Many of the furnishings are originals and were used by the original owner. Docents are available to take you through the house on guided tours, and they are fonts of knowledge about the man himself and his time period. The house can be found at 514 North 6th Street. Chaffee Barbershop Museum This iconic barbershop is world-famous as the site where Elvis Presley received his GI buzzcut when he joined the US Army in 1958. Besides Elvis, it also hosted thousands of soldiers when they received their first military haircut. The barbershop has been restored to its original glory and looks exactly as it did when Elvis first walked in. The barbershop hosts a museum illustrating the 70-year history of Fort Chaffee and is packed full of military memorabilia. Here you'll find items from WWII to the present. Fort Smith National Historic Site True crime enthusiasts and history buffs will appreciate visiting the Fort Smith National Historic Site where Judge Isaac Parker served as a U.S. District Judge from 1875- 1896. Known as the “Hanging Judge,” Parker sentenced eight of 18 convicted murderers to death, hanging them on the same day.  Altogether, parker sentenced 160 people to death with 73 executed on the gallows. More men were put to death by the U.S. government at this location than at any other.At the Fort Smith Historic Site, visitors can explore the grounds, the commissary building, and a reconstruction of the gallows used to hang the 73 executed men. The walking trail along the Arkansas River, the Trail of Tears, has great exhibits along the way. The music played is light 1980s, which is pleasant and easy on the ears. They use organic, fair-trade coffee that's been freshly roasted to give you that delicious taste and flavor. Chapters On Main Chapters was established in 2016 and pair two wonderful things great coffee and interesting books. The shop was once just an old, unappreciated bookstore, but it's now turned into one of the most exciting places in town. They're also multiple award winners of best bookstore in Arkansas. They use Onyx coffee for its smooth flavors and high quality. We like the black salted mocha, and that we can get is in 12oz, 16oz, or 20oz. It hits the spot. They also offer macchiato, lattes,and cappuccinos. Chapters is located at 816 Main Street, Van Buren, and they're open Sweet Bay Coffee Company Sweet Bay is locally owned and operated, and was founded in 1996. Locals and visitors liked their coffee so much they've expanded and now have four branches in Fort Smith. Their success is due to their fresh roasted coffee, finely blended syrups, and great customer service. When you walk into a coffee shop and you're greeted by someone with a bright smile, your day just seems to get better. This friendly service has made Sweet Bay a hit. The jukebox in the corner, the furnishings, and the friendly service all combine to make you feel right at home. All their food is made from scratch. There can be a short wait for your food, but the high-quality food is worth it. They're open 24 hours, so you never have to worry about missing out on their food. They have a variety of breakfast specials, pancakes, eggs, and omelets. We enjoy the steak and eggs, with a 6oz sirloin, two eggs, hashbrowns, and toast. The menu also carries a comprehensive selection of breakfast sides to round out your meal. If you'd like a breakfast sandwich, there are more than eighteen options for you to choose from. Benson's can be found at 2515 Rogers Avenue. Miss Anna's On Towson Miss Anna's serves classic home-style cooking. If you're not a local, you might easily miss this hidden gem. They're located at 5001 Towson Avenue, and they're open from 6 am to 10 pm daily. With nine specialty breakfasts, omelets, and pancakes, you're guaranteed to find something you're going to love. Anna's skillet is a winner, with two scrambled eggs, bacon, ham, sausage, hash browns, and your choice of cheese. The campsites in section A are along the river and offer great fishing opportunities right out the door of your RV. The other sites with water access are in Loop E, along the shore of John Paul Hammerschmidt Lake. Loop B sites aren't on the water but are close to the bike trail and one of the boat launches. Springhill Park is open year-round, and campsites can be booked online. It's most popular for the fantastic fishing. Anglers catch catfish, bream, crappie, and white and largemouth bass year-round in the Arkansas River. The tailwaters below the dock and dam have some of the best sauger fishing in the country from late fall into early spring. The 10-mile bike trail in the park is great for all riders and is designated a National Recreation Trail. Waveland Park This beautiful campground is on the shore of Blue Mountain Lake, in the shadow of Mt. Magazine, the highest mountain in Arkansas. All 51 sites have electric and water hookups, and there is a dump station in the park. This park is popular among families, and kids can enjoy swimming in the lake or playing on the playground. There are plenty of hiking trails to explore in the nearby national forest. This park also offers excellent fishing and hunting opportunities. Horsehead Lake Campground Located in the Ozark-St. Francis National Forest, this campground is cooperatively managed by the US Forest Service and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. It is open year-round and available first come, first serve, no reservations necessary. The lake is a no-wake lake, so smaller trolling motors or non-motorized kayaks and canoes are ideal. The lake is also great for swimming but be aware that swimming is at your own risk, and there are no lifeguards on duty. All of these great parks are less than 60 miles from Fort Smith, so getting out in nature is no problem at all, as long as your truck is up for the job.
